Why I Built This App: A Love Letter to Partnership

It starts, like most good ideas, with a screwup.

A few years ago I realized — at 9:40 on a Thursday night, scrolling my phone on the couch — that our dating anniversary had been two days earlier. Neither of us had said anything. She'd noticed, of course. She'd just decided not to make it a thing, which was somehow worse than if she had.

Here's what got me: I hadn't forgotten because I didn't care. I'd have done anything for her that week. I'd also worked two twelve-hour days, handled a plumbing emergency, and kept a small human alive. The love was there. The bandwidth wasn't. And the gap between those two things is where a lot of good relationships quietly take damage.

The pattern I couldn't unsee

Once I started paying attention, I saw the same pattern everywhere — in my friends, my brothers, myself. The guys weren't thoughtless. They were unscheduled. They'd move mountains on request, but the noticing, the remembering, the landing-it-at-the-right-moment — that ran on a system nobody had ever built.

Meanwhile the people we loved were carrying all of it in their heads: every birthday, every preference, every "we should do something for—." There's a name for that invisible workload, and the fix isn't a grand gesture once a year. The fix is showing up small, correctly, over and over.

I started keeping notes in my phone. Her coffee order. The flowers she actually likes (not roses — ranunculus). Her sizes, so gifts didn't require an interrogation. Dates, with reminders set a week early so I could do something good instead of something panicked. It was embarrassingly low-tech. It also worked immediately. I stopped missing things. Better: I started landing things.

So I built the tool I was faking

Little Things is that pile of notes, grown up. The important dates, with a tap on the shoulder before each one. All her favorites in one place. One small idea a day — a nudge toward the kind of "just cuz" gesture that makes someone feel seen on a completely ordinary Tuesday.

It is not a replacement for caring. It's plumbing for caring. The thought still has to be yours; the app just makes sure the thought arrives on time.

Why it all stays on your phone

One decision was non-negotiable from day one: everything stays on your device. No accounts, no servers, no analytics. What you write about the person you love — her name, her favorites, your notes — is intimate. It shouldn't sit in someone's database, including mine. I built it so I never receive it. Not "we promise not to look." We can't.

That choice costs us things a normal startup wants — dashboards, growth metrics, retargeting. Worth it. The app makes its keep from small commissions when you buy flowers or gifts through it, clearly labeled. That's the whole business model, and it only works if the app actually makes you better at this.

The love letter part

Partnership, the real kind, isn't built on anniversaries. It's built on the eleven-second text at 2pm. The right coffee appearing without being asked. The flowers that show up when nothing is wrong. The dates that never sneak up on you again.

You already love her. This just helps you show your work.
